Wishpot

Wishpot is an online Wish list, much like the wish list that Amazon provides, only a bit more social. Wishpot potentially can have a variety of uses, but their main market is weddings and babies.
Knowing nothing about babies but quite a lot about weddings, I thought I’d take on this review. I decided to use Wishlist to come up with my ideal wedding gift list. So how did it go?

My first step was to create a Pi’s “Living Hopefully” Wedding Register list. If you’ve mastered Social Networking sites you’ll find this bit a breeze. To create my list, I essentially created my own profile, attached a wedding list page and then invited my friends to join. Your list even has its own URL to send to your friends. It’s like Facebook for shopping!

Next I had to figure out how to add to my Wish List. There are four methods as it turned out, only three seemed really intrusive and one seemed very long-winded. In the end I opted to download a Wishpot Browser button for my toolbar. I could add new toys, but what now?

The site is fairly easy to navigate, being rather classic in design with lots of pretty pictures. The main categories across the top are Home (for your own lists, friends and inbox), Registries & Wish lists (for creating your list), and Shop (for adding your items).

Obviously I first looked up Gadgets in the Shop section. What brand-new married life is complete without new toys to bond or despair over? On Wishpot they don’t call them Gadgets, but Gizmo’s! Most of the other categories are fairly self explanatory; Cosmetics, Baby bedding, and Kitchenware to name but a few. I clicked on the Gizmo link and a very small but varied list came up. Down the left side of the page you are able to sort the products by either price or type, down the right is your Buy, Add to Wishlist or Rate buttons.

Once you’ve added a few items to your list it’s now time to send it on to your friends. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to message my friends unless they were members, but that turned out not to be the case. I put in the email addresses for a couple of my friends and Wishpot sent them the direct URL for my list in moments. Complete with the rather cute name I had given it. How embarrassing.

What surprised me was how much control my friends had over my list once they had the URL. They could delete items, move them into other lists or rate them. Considering the stress involved in your average wedding, this could be a blessing, provided your guests are the responsible sort.

There is a lot more to Wishpot than what I’ve mentioned so far. There are also various blogs attached (which are US based), a choice of different widgets which can be used, price alerts, a calendar for upcoming birthdays and the choice of sharing your list to either Facebook or Twitter. All up it’s a very well-rounded site.
Would I use it if I were getting married? Yes.
