The GE WP digital camera looks like your usual point-and-shoot. Its 12.2mp, it’s small and is a nice metallic colour. However the GE WP has one thing that your usual snappy doesn’t have, as it’s also water proof for up to 3 metres (10 feet).
It’s a bit hard to find water around London in the winter. Short of taking my chances and sneaking it into the
pool at my gym, I had to make do with what I had. First stop, my bathroom. I’ve got to admit I was nervous the
first time I put the GE WP in the water. I had visions of it filling up and dying in my hands. The rush of bubbles when
first immersed gave me a heart attack, but there was nothing wrong with the camera. It was quite happy to play in the
bath with my rubber duckies.
Next was my friend’s pond. It was cold. I didn’t leave it in there long for fear of freezing the innards. Really this camera is for hotter temperatures with pool parties, scuba diving and dancing in the rain. All this would be possible as the one thing that really impressed me about this camera was the image stabilizer.
If you don’t know, Image Stabilization is a fabulous piece of technology which sets your image so the movement of your hand doesn’t blur your photo. I took the GE out with me for a big chunk of the festive season and came back with not a single blurred photo in my collection. I’m not the most brilliant photographer so I was impressed.
Other things you should know about the GE WP:-
It has smile detection, panorama, blink detection and video.
With the flash you have the choice of auto, red-eye or slow syncho flash (for low light)
With the Scene Modes, you can either choose one manually, or you can put the camera on ASCN Auto Scene mode.
This enables the camera to choose for you while you just snap away.
There are cameras out there that take better photos than this one, but the GE WP has the advantage of not only being waterproof, but having an excellent Image Stabilization ability.
The G3 WP retails for £140 and is available from all good camera retailers.
