GE G2
Review by PI

score: 9 out of 10

Product: GE G2

The GE G2 is a very cute camera. Mine was red which pleased me greatly, but they also come in black and silver. It claims to be one of the lightest cameras on the market and that's possibly true. In the hand it seems really tiny and the extra weight was barely noticeable once I'd dropped it into my handbag. This camera could easily be carried to picnics, parties or anywhere else where photo opportunities may present themselves. Looking at the tiny size you can't help but wonder about the photo quality, but it turns out that size (sometimes) isn't everything. With 8 megapixels, a video option and a large LCD screen you quickly realise that the photos are actually quite good. More than acceptable for your photo album or facebook profile.

This isn't a greatly technical camera. My technophobic mum would probably like the G2, especially now that she's learned to send photo's via email. There are very few controls on the outside and all the settings have useful names like 'snow' 'fireworks' or 'grass'. There is even a setting for taking photos through glass! This came in handy at the Dr Who exhibition. It only takes 4 hours to charge the camera battery which then seems to last most of the day, so you can be out and snapping quite quickly. Once you've taken a photo there is still a lot you can do in terms of cropping, zooming in on particular shots, reducing red-eye and protecting individual photos from accidental deletion.

The GE G2 also has some technology that was new to me. Face detection, blink detection and smile detection are all available at the push of a button. All three are best used for profile shots or photographs of individuals. Blink detection puzzled me at first as it doesn't stop you taking a photo of someone blinking, it merely tells you when you have. In hindsight I realised how useful that could be in ensuring you get a second photo, particularly if the person in question really hates having their photo taken. Smile technology is fun to play with. The camera won't actually take the photo until it can focus in on a person's mouth. Great for getting that perfect smile shot, not so great if your subject refuses to look at the camera.

This is a nice little camera for taking photos during the day or in well lit places. In darkness the camera takes a lot longer to focus but the resulting photo quality is just as good. I wouldn't be showing this camera off to any camera snobs, but as a keeper of nice memories the G2 more than does the job. I got quite attached to this camera and probably would have bought one myself if it had come in pink. Maybe I shall write to them and request a pink version
