Brother DCP-585CW

score: 9 out of 10

Product: Brother DCP-585CW

This wireless colour ink jet multifunction printer really is outstanding value for money and very well priced at £110. The compact printer impressed me from the outset with it's stylish design and wireless functionality. I was keen to see how good it really was at all the multifunction tasks. When unpacking the printer it is easy to see that Brother have gone to a lot of effort to ensure everything is safely secured and wrapped up well, so that there is no potential for damage to the printer in transit.

Product: Brother DCP-585CW The set up was very quick with clearly laid out step by step instructions. The paper tray is conveniently located inside the machine and also the lid that comes out for the paper to sit on after a print, scan or copy doesn't protrude out too far, which I really like. There is no danger of knocking it or yourself! It holds around 50 sheets of paper which is good because it allows you to complete a fairly big print job in one go.

Inserting the cartridges was self explanatory unlike my old printer and you can forget about needing to use scissors or instructions to get them out of the packaging and into the printer. Opening and inserting them was effortless which is a definite bonus, and you don't need to worry about what cartridge goes where and in terms of getting them fully functional took 4 minutes and everything was clearly labelled. The LCD also screen tells you exactly how long it takes to get the cartridges up and running which was so much better than my old printer. Loading ink cartridges with my old printer and getting them working not only took an age but also you would have to clean the heads which drained my ink massively. I am happy to report that its completely the opposite with this printer. Once the cartridges are loaded the printer asks you to check the quality and I must say the quality was Perfect.

Loading the software onto my pc was very quick and easy. I have Windows 7 and I've had a few recent issues getting other products software working on it (my old printer wouldn't run and neither would the software for a Dictaphone I purchased recently). This install happened without any hitches and was very clear in terms of where you were in the process. I wasn't sure how straight forward it would be to get the wireless connection working but literally all you need to do is pop in the password and that's it! There is of course the ability to plug in the printer to your PC but one of the main attractions for me was the wireless capability. I have a pc and a few laptops at home and by having the wireless feature it means no restrictions. I can print no matter what room I'm in and irrespective of what device I'm using (pc or laptop).

Product: Brother DCP-585CW Once the printer was fully operational I went about testing just how good this multi function printer was. I have to say the printing process was very quiet and very fast, especially when compared to my old printer and the actual print quality was very impressive. All of the features were excellent in their own right. The print, photocopy, scan and photo printing were all extremely fast and with excellent quality to boot. The 3.3 inch colour LCD screen is also a great feature. It allows viewing, editing and enhancing photo's direct from a memory card or usb stick and tells you important information about the status and settings of the printer. Thereʽs also an Enhance Photo option that lets you apply effects to your pictures eg Auto Correct, Remove Red Eye, etc and you can choose to all your photos or a selection. The printer has so many options scanning to e-mail, file, card or USB and supports JPEG, PDF or TIFF formats.

The scanning function allows you to scan everything from single page documents to books. Photocopying was very straight forward, not only can you select the number of copies you want direct from the printer but you can also select if you want colour or black and white from the printer panel. So much easier than having to find the options setting from your PC. It's a great feature which saves time and ink if you only want to print or photocopy something in black and white.

I was also impressed with the print quality of both photo's and documents although I do have to say that towards the end of a large print job the quality did fade slightly and the cartridges were in need of replacement cartridges after about 75 - 85 printed sheets. Overall I extremely happy with the performance of the Brother printer DCP-585CW. Its great value for money and you really do get your money's worth as it is functionally rich. If I were to give it a rating out of 10 I'd give it a 9.
