The Colour Changing Tap Light (CCTL) is a very simple gadget, but such a great idea. Basically it's a waterproof light fitting which screws onto the end of your tap and shines light through the running water. Not interested yet? Well it gets better. The colours aren't just there for decoration, they actually change depending on the temperature of the water. Red for hot water and blue for cold. Very useful if you have taps like mine which take a while to heat up. You can wander off and wait for the red light, rather than having to constantly monitor with your fingers. It can also be used to train absentminded housemates with a tendency for sticking hands in scalding water..
I had a bit of trouble finding a place to fit the CCTL. We had three different flats at our disposal but each time was left frustrated due to the taps being too small, too ancient, or just oddly shaped. Finally I had the idea to take the CCTL to work with me. With the aid of my trusty pink screwdriver it finally found a home. Hurrah!
It only took me five minutes to fit the CCTL after I worked out which way to unscrew the original aerator (the correct direction was in the enclosed instructions which I probably should have read).
I was concerned as the water at my work is only lukewarm at best. Mercifully the CCTL dealt with that as well. Blue for slightly-on-the-colder side of warm, and red for when it was slightly-better-than warm. One of my collegues rolled her eyes upon spying the CCTL. Luckily the other two shared my enthusiasm, with over 5 minutes spent with the three of us watching the tap rather than doing any actual work.
The CCTL comes already put together, along with two universal aerators. The body is made
of chrome, a black rubber 'O' ring keeps it waterproof and the light is powered by three
LR44 batteries. When the time comes to replace the batteries, the CCTL is very easy
to pull apart and put back together again. My only issue with the CCTL is that
it lengthens the tap. This can be annoying if you have a shallow basin and a rather large
kettle which needs filling. I'm thinking that this gadget would be best suited in a very
deep bath, preferably a Jacuzzi!
