Medion GoPal Glamour Edition

score: 7 out of 10

Product: Medion GoPal E3215 - Glamour Edition

You know what they say about busses? Well that's just what's happened to me with Sat Navs - Never touched one, then two come along at once! Now, if you've read some of my other review's you might have deduced that I'm not generally taken by the idea that making something pink or flowery is all that's needed to buy into a female audience, so the initial marketing blurb for the GoPal Glamour had me slightly edgy about what I was going to receive. On opening the box though, I was both relived, and impressed by the unit inside. The main unit, described as "Pearlescent Pink" is really more pearl than pink, and I found it a refreshing change from the usual black. At only 1.7cm thick, and with a 3.5in screen, this is a neat, slim and compact unit. It *does* have a much pinker carry sleeve, but that's easily used or discarded for personal preference ;)

I was less impressed with the windscreen mount though, it was a bulky clear plastic affair, and not the most user-friendly of devices. Some design improvements wouldn't go amiss here, however it did its job, and the GoPal once positioned, remained firmly stuck to the windscreen.

So to the software - I really liked it, it was intuitive, and I was soon happily route planning (Europe again - *hint* Alex!), stopping to have a look around the built-in Berlitz travel guides for the towns I was travelling through, and generally having a good play with the functions available. TMC Traffic updates are standard with this unit, rather than an expensive add-on, and all the expected functions like actual speed, time to destination are there and work well. I couldn't find customisation options for the voice like other makes have, but I was quite happy with the default voice so it wasn't an issue for me.

My first real frustration came when I was planning for a 'proper' road test, and slightly wanted to adjust my route, I happen to know that a road it wanted me to go down is extremely busy at the time I wanted to travel, so I thought I'd try and calculate a different route - now it might have been me, but I tried and tried, but couldn't make it do it. However, that didn't seem to matter in the end, because when I set off and took a slightly different route the GoPal instantly recalculated for me, switching roads so smoothly that I detoured a little more to see if it would keep up - It did, beautifully!

I didn't have a chance to play with it in walking or cycling modes, but I suspect it would perform just as well, and I'm quite taken with the idea of using a Sat Nav whilst visiting a strange town.

So, I'd like to see the mount changed, and there's room for a little tweaking in the software but overall, this gets very definite thumbs up from me,
