Despite my love of pink it's not a colour I normally associate with automobiles. When I think of cars I think of butch stuff like petrol pumps, car jacks and greasy fingers, so I was a bit bemused when a candy-pink car emergency kit turned up at our door. Luckily this kit isn't as fluffy as its colour and would be quite a useful thing to have around for any woman who takes her driving seriously.
The Pink Car Kit comes in a soft pink case and everything else in the case, with the exception of the jump leads is pink as well. While the colour may be a bit much for some, it is a very well equipped kit. It has all the things you'd expect including a pad, pencil and tax disc holder, plus a few thoughtful extra's like the pink bag for latex gloves and the pink air freshener. There are a few items however, that make this kit really interesting - the torch, the phone charger and the ice scraper.
- • The torch has to be the best item in this kit and also the one that has attracted the most attention from visitors. Running on two AA batteries, it also functions as a beacon, a hammer, a seat belt cutter and has a magnetic base so it can sit on the roof or bonnet. Rather than being heavy as you'd expect, the torch is extraordinarily light. If you lose everything else in The Pink Car Kit, this would be something to chain on to the glove compartment.
- • The ice scraper is not only pink, but sparkly as well. As I have little knowledge of ice or snow (coming as I did from a place with neither) I handed the scraper to Alex to study. She was very impressed with the quality, pointing out that it is well designed to protect your thumb and fingers while being used. We actually had a chance to test it out one cold and icy morning, and while there was little ice to be dealt with, the scraper handled very well.
- • The plastic phone charger is battery operated and is attached to a key ring. Powered by four AAA batteries, it has adaptors for most of the more popular mobile phones brands. If you have a smart phone with a mini USB port however, you are out of luck with this device. I tested it out on my Nokia 95 and while it isn't as reliable as a plug-in car charger, it worked and would be useful to have if there was no other alternative.
I expected The Pink Car Kit to be the usual kind of rubbish that's usually
thrown at girls, but considering how inexpensive the kit is, ended up pleasantly
surprised. If you love pink or know someone who does, this could be a good
addition to the family. Please remember that if you are buying this as a
gift, make sure you include batteries for the torch and the phone charger
- and you may want to throw in a few extra latex gloves just to be sure...
Available online from Amazon and other stockists for around £25.
