Devolo dLAN 200 Wireless G

score: 8 out of 10

Product: Devolo dLAN 200 200 Wireless G Starter Kit

the dLan 200 AV Wireless G is your solution to wireless networking for the home. The frustration of not being able to get online in your sitting room because your wireless router is located at the other end of the house or flat (with the signal from a single router just not strong enough to reach you) is no longer a problem. Devolo have solved this with this easy and simple step by step setup kit.

Product: dLan 200 Wireless G The kit includes a wireless router with built-in Homeplug networking, a small Homeplug unit and an Ethernet cable.

So how does this work? In layman terms WLAN means wireless networking. dLAN means networking via the household power grid. All those cables that run invisibly through your walls now act as railway lines for your wireless signal to run on.

Setting the whole thing up is easy. Open box to find a foldout installation instruction sheet with big clear pictures and large step-by-step instructions. First and only real question I had was, ‘Why can’t it be plugged into a power board?’, (I have too many gadgets requiring power and limited plugs, as many a households have inadequate numbers of power outlets for our expanding world of gadgets) as the pictorial instruction sheet shows. I ignored this and didn’t seem to encounter any problems because of it. Simply plug your Homeplug into the wall and then with the cable provided, connect it to your existing internet wireless router. Go to that out–of-the-way room, from where you wish you could get online and plug in your Devolo Router. It is that simple.

Product: dLan 200 Wireless G Product: dLan 200 Wireless GAfter setup you have the small question of security. I recommend not leaving your network unsecured. You can put a password on once the dLan is up and running. Devolo includes a CD and once loaded it tracks down its router on the network and opens the web configuration interface. It did take a little time to understand, as I found it all a little confusing not really knowing what password was for what. However, if like me you struggle with this you can simply press the small button on the back of the Homeplug, and then the Router (within a few minutes of each other) and that’s it! Your dLAN 200 AV network is now protected against unauthorised access.

At around £140, dLan 200 AV Wireless G isn’t cheap, but you could easily spend £80 on a similar Homeplug link and £50 on a wireless router. A very neat and easy solution which most certainly avoids the need to drill holes, and lay down wiring, for the freedom of wireless throughout your home!
