I am a fan of in the ear headphones and it would take a lot to tear me away from my trusty Sennheisers. However, these
headphones from Urbanz present something different and I thought it was about time I branched out a little. Urbanz has a
range of DJ Headphones available – I was given the Block DJ Headphones in blue/black. They are undeniably funky in
appearance, probably a little too funky for me, but they most definitely fulfil the “individual” and
“fun” style statements on the website!
The product description contains the major features, so to address these in turn:
1. “Light weight DJ design with foldable headphone convenience”
These headphones are definitely lighter than they look. Whilst that is of benefit, it does also result in a slightly
“plastic” feel. However, they are fairly rigid and the hinges appear to be solid – and that was after
twisting it through more than 720 degrees, which you’re probably not meant to do! The spring is fairly solid and
means that the speakers clamp to your ears securely. Unfortunately, pressure was applied to a point just above my ears,
which after a while was slightly uncomfortable, despite adjusting the length. It is possible to “fold” one
speaker upwards which decreases the size of the headphones, thus saving space. These aren’t a pair of headphones
that I would be able to wear for long periods at a time.
2. “Self adjusting leather head pads + additional Colour pair”
The leather pads are soft and do try to mould to your ears. However, they are a little on the thin side and are not
awfully comfortable. The additional colour pair would have been rather good if they had been in virtually any other
colour than grey!
3. “Pure sound performance ideal for digital audio”
The sound is very clear. The bass, however, is not great and overall the sound is rather tinny. The headphones are good
at blocking out outside noise and directing the sound straight to your ears. Trying to have a conversation when the sound
is off is rather surreal – my voice sounded like it was coming from another room, although I could hear my friend
perfectly! Noise “leakage” is a tad louder than expected and was rather annoying for my companion.
4. “Funky carry case with matching carabiner”
I do have an issue with the case being “funky”! Its not much more than a glorified toiletries case. As for the
carabiner.... why?!
5. “1 year warranty”
One major plus point is the fact that not only do you get 1 year free warranty, but you also receive
a free lifetime, yes, lifetime warranty if you register at www.urbanz.co.uk.
That’s a pretty good deal if you ask me! There is a section on the website containing details about the lifetime
warranty – you must register within 30 days of purchase and there are further steps to take in respect of faults
that occur after 1 year and, quite understandably, Urbanz reserves the right to exclude items from the warranty that have
been misused or have been used not for the purpose intended. Don’t say you haven’t been warned!
Speaking of the website, its worth a quick visit: there are a number of other rather interesting products
available to purchase – a range of headphones (in ear, lightweight and ear hooks), a variety of speakers, computer
protection (netbook bags, netbook and laptop sleeves), LED torch keyrings and a collection of bags.
My conclusion? They’re ok for a pair of headphones but they are not great with a distinct lack of bass. Their USP, and what will instantly attract you or not, is their funky style. Personally I can’t see myself wearing them much, but I can’t deny that they are not fun, funky and most decidedly different.
